If The Last Incarnation for some reason was the only book you had written, is it complete (enough)?

I think the original version was clearly the start of an epic story, something I went in and toned down to a stand-alone story. I would say Barr’s journey to avenge his father and the people he grew to call his own, despite his treatment, is an encapsulated tale with a satisfying conclusion. The problem arises in how the end of that arc is the new beginning of another very old one. After talking with numerous readers who have finished the book, I’m completely satisfied it can stand on its own if for some reason I never complete the trilogy – say, for instance, if some incredible video game came out and consumed my life for the next four or five years (what’s the release date for Knights of the Old Republic again?). The second book was rewritten with the same intent, to continue exactly where the first had left off but to construct it as a stand-alone story that doesn’t require the reader to have read it.
