Ok, so for those of you that know the story behind the Ascension series, this will come as no new news. However, since many of you do not know, I will share it with you now.

The History…

J.A. Giunta has been working on the trilogy for what seems like forever. Certainly going back as far as he and I worked on Anthology magazine together while he was still finishing up his college degree, we’ll just say that was a long time ago.

When he first self published books one (The Last Incarnation) and two (The Mysts of Faeron), I remember coming over to his house and seeing the boxes of books stacked in the dining room. The was a good 2 or three years before I even started Brick Cave Media, so sometime in 2005/2006.

It wasn’t long after that that he announced he was going to rewrite the second book.

Now, I don’t know why he decides these things, I’ve seen him trash perfectly good stories over the years merely on a whim, so I am totally used to that kind of behavior from Joe. Additionally, he pretty much always gets the job done.

So, he rewrote the second book (and really the third book as well, but he had never released book three, Out of the Dark, anyway, so nobody knew). The other thing he did was to invest in his covers, having the tremendous Henning Ludvigsen create whole new (and infinitely better) covers for each of the three books. I say this because since we have republished them, almost every sale of the book I’ve made in person has been based at least partially on the cover.

So, some people that have the original book two, with it’s original cover, and completely different storyline, have a collectors item. It had faded into the sunset. How different? It’s almost an alternate reality to the events following book one. Different character names, events and plot. A fundamentally different book from the subsequent rewrite.

An Opportunity for You

I say all this to help you the reader understand how cool it is that Joe found a couple of the old books, and passed them on to Brick Cave Media (when he would have normally tossed them).

So, here is what we are going to do. We are going to auction them off. But not just them, we are going to auction off a copy of both the original and the new version, together as a set, signed by Joe, this coming February 2012. That means you’ll be able to get your TMOF a full 3 months before anyone else.

Oh, but wait, there’s more!

Of the winning bid, Brick Cave Media will donate 50% of the proceeds to two Charities, one of Joe’s choosing, and one of the winning bidder’s choosing.

Book two, The Mists of Faeron, has a solid release date of May 1, 2012. Solid because the publisher Brick Cave Books has the manuscript, cover and all in hand and we are ready to go. Expect pre-sales to start between 2/15-3/1. The reason we don’t release the book sooner, is because we have expanded our writer’s roster from the 3-4 we had in 2011, to about 10 in 2012. As such, we have alot of books to prepare and promote, and we want to give each book it’s due.

Book three, Out of the Dark, has a release date tentatively scheduled for November 1st, 2012. Mr. Giunta is finishing this book, but otherwise the project is ready to go (graphics, etc.). We’ll know more by May regarding how solid that date is. We won’t be able to push the release date too far out, since the world ends on December 21st, we’ll want to give you a chance to read it before then…

When you look at the Fantasy writing genre today, what do you like, and what do you think could be better?

I like that it’s still a genre, that it’s no longer lumped together with science fiction and going strong. Beyond that, it’s hard to say. I’m not a part of that system, of shelves lined with new and old books from authors I’ve known for years and others I’ve never seen. I don’t read as often as I used to and visit bookstores even less. While that may or may not be typical of others, I can safely say the lack of time devoted to reading for me has declined directly due to my computer and the internet. Things, information, are just so much more accessible now than they were before the internet was commonplace. Games are better, and there’s a lot more of them. Social media has taken on a life of its own, shifting my priorities where I allot time for the day.

Perhaps it’s for the best, that whatever can be converted to an electronic file is finding its way online and to a greater audience. I may prefer to read books in paper form, but I certainly like the idea of reaching more people. Think of all the potential enjoyment we could have missed out on because an agent’s assistant was overworked or didn’t like the first paragraph, because an editor was forced to choose between a handful of manuscripts and only one was even close to what was popular at the moment, or a major bookstore thought a book wasn’t selling as fast as it should and sent the remainder back to the publisher. Maybe it is for the better, that readers will get to decide for themselves what books they should spend their time on, that a novel can be purchased from your desk and only cost a candy bar rather than two lunches. Notice I didn’t use coffee as a standard.

Reviewers, bloggers and reader commentary could shape sales, and in such numbers that tampering would not sway the final vote. Creativity would no longer be constrained by corporate greed, at least in this single medium, but flourish under the freedom of choice. It may just be that publishing industry is due for an overhaul.

It’s just yet to be seen whether technology will set us free or drown us in choices.
